Jeff Porter returns to LAVA after a four season hiatus. Jeff has a long history with volleyball.
Club-wise, he began coaching in 1983 with the Palisades VBC, coaching several teams and
directing the club. His 14's team won the very first Volleyball Festival title. In 1987 he started
the "original" Club West Juniors VBC on the westside. Club West produced many strong teams,
earning several top finishes: 14's: Second and Fifth at the VB Festival and a Silver medal at the
JO's (Misty May led that team), 16's: 6 th and a 9 th at the Festival 18's: 5 th at the Festival. In 1998
he joined up with SMBC (now LAVA) and coached at many levels (13's, 14's, 15's, 18's).
Jeff also ran the Club West Summer VB program from 1985 to 2015.
School ball-wise, Jeff coached Varsity boys and girls at Brentwood School, a total of 55 seasons.
In that time 2 State titles and 10 CIF titles were earned by his teams. In the CIF-Southern
Section, Jeff is 2 nd is titles won all time.
Alumni form Jeff's school and club teams have gone on play college ball (D1 and D3). Amongst
them, there are 6 NCAA champions. One alum even earned a spot on the 1996 USA Olympic
Team. And, as of the 2016 season, two "grand-alums" became NCAA D1 champs.
More than the winning and success "stuff", Jeff loves TEACHING the game … there is nothing
more important to him. Whether it is school ball or club ball, there is nothing that will get
players to their potential than being sound in the fundamentals of serve, pass, set, hit, dig,
block. Winning is great, but Jeff truly believes that you cannot see much of that without strong
skills and fully engaged TEAM work.
Jeff has three daughters who all played, two who played for him at Brentwood and were CIF
champions. And now, he can't wait to teach his two granddaughters (5 and 1).
